2015/16 is a big year for GCU Sport as we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of student sport at the university. Since 1991 GCU has been at the heart of student sport in the city and during that time has seen over 25,000 students pass through its student led sports clubs before graduating in to the wider world.

During the past 25 years, GCU Sport has gone from a handful of clubs to nearly 40 clubs that a cover a wide range of activities. At the same time, our clubs have also spread across the city to train and compete in every corner of the city.

GCU is delighted to have such a diverse sports club scene; we consider GCU sports clubs to be a big part of Glasgow’s city centre sports activities, so our students believe that GCU is ‘In Your Area’.  For people who watched and attended the ‘pure dead brilliant’ Commonwealth Games in the city during the summer of 2014, the slogan ‘People Make Glasgow’ will be forever entwined with the best games yet. GCU Sport is at the heart of the city. Our clubs use over 20 different venues in and around the city including several Commonwealth facilities including; the National Hockey Centre, the Emirates Arena, the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and Tollcross Swimming Centre.

As well as training and competing in the city, our clubs also get involved in campaigns and charity work to help support local charities and raise awareness of various causes. In December our Netball and Women’s Basketball teams got involved in the annual Santa Dash around the city, our Women’s Basketball team also ran a wheelchair basketball session to raise awareness of the sport within our student population and our swimming team will be doing a sponsored swim to raise funds for a local swimming charity to name just a few.

As well as raising funds for external campaigns and charities, all our sports clubs raise money for a fund that is close to our sports student’s hearts.

2016 sees the 10th anniversary of the Alex Goodman Fund and Award, created in memory of Alex who passed away suddenly in 2006. Alex Goodman was a former student and the first Sports President at GCU, he campaigned for extra funding for clubs and for a paid sabbatical sports position, without Alex’s commitment there would be no GCU Sports Clubs. The fund goes towards helping sports member’s development by offering subsides for coaching and officiating courses and the award is presented to the best first year student in a Sports Club. Sport at GCU is more than the winning and losing of fixtures and competitions. It’s about the community, the togetherness and the friendships that are formed along the way.
