Alex goodman fund 2017

Alex Goodman was involved as a student volunteer playing a vital role in developing sport at GCU. As the volunteer Sports President (1995-96) he pioneered the campaign to have a sabbatical Sports President, resulting in the first post beginning in the summer of 1996. Additionally, he made a major contribution when the Sports Union's first constitution was written. Elected onto Student Representative Council in second year, Alex remained involved in the council as an undergraduate until elected as Student President in 1996/97. During his involvement as both Sports and Student President, funding for sport was substantially increased from £3,500 to £15,000.

Actively involved in sport at GCU, Alex enjoyed playing cricket and basketball and was recognised for his voluntary contribution to basketball in 1997 by being presented with a Colours certificate at the 2nd Annual Sports Awards Ball. Alex's involvement and contribution to sport at GCU was crucial in laying the foundations for future years, his commitment and energy for promoting sport to students is still felt today.

Alex passed away suddenly in the summer of 2006 and GCU students decided that they wanted to remember and recognise Alex’s contribution to sport at GCU in two ways. The first was an annual sports award called the Alex Goodman Award, to recognise outstanding contribution to sport by a first year student. This year the recipient of the Alex Goodman Award was Ben Ivory of Trampolining.

Since joining the club Ben has continually provided an outstanding contribution, as he has undergone a judging course to be on the panel at competitions and has been a major support for those less confident on the trampoline.

Ben attended almost every training session and built on his skills and performance week on week. Having previously only trained at High School P.E. level he has come a long way in such a short period of time and as a result was able to compete at the third highest category of competition.

Ben became a highly valued member of the team and has taken it upon himself to help the committee to fundraise, arrange competitions, coach and maintain our membership throughout the year, overall an outstanding commitment and contribution.

Furthermore Ben has shown interest to go through the qualifications for a coaching course and judging refresher to ensure that in the coming years, the club can continue to grow and do well in the league competitions.

All this amazing work has resulted in Ben taking on Committee Role with the club next year!

The second was the Alex Goodman Fund; The Alex Goodman Fund is a resource to help support the personal development of students that are active volunteer coaches, instructors, referees or activity co-ordinators in a GCU Sports Club. The funding is available to supplement the cost of training courses and qualifications and other personal development expenses.

Any GCU student who makes a voluntary contribution to a Sports Club is eligible to apply.

We would again like to congratulate Ben Ivory on his achievement during 2016-17.
