Disappointing move by GCU to not embrace the use of AI tools

The principle recently shared an email stating clearly that any use of AI programs such as ChatGPT will be classified as cheating.

This is disappointing for 2 reasons:

1) The University wants to be seen as progressive, but it countinues to follow old outdated learning methods, and instead of having a debate or allowing for a discussion for new tools to be used, outright bans them.

2) There is obviously still a debate but many universities are having very intense discussions on how to use tools like ChatGPT to their advantage. UCL, Glasgow, and many others are reviewing how to allow students to use these language models to their advantage.

The IB Diploma Programe, which is regarded as the most rigorous pre university qualification, has fully embraced AI language models. Students who use them will have to explicitly cite when they did and this is seen as very good decision by many. AI detection software can be used anyways, so if students cite either a line written by the AI system, or some statistics, this can be seen to work.

Overall, if nothing else - students and even teachers shold be consulted, in order to see how to use such tools to broader learning. An outright ban seems very regressive.

You answered your own question, it needs investigating and thought through so currently a ban has to be put in place. What is the point in attending university to use AI to do the work for you.
